Roller Vixens Announce Schedule

GRAND ISLAND — The Platte Valley Roller Vixens are gearing up for their fourth season of roller derby action and are excited to be back at the Fonner Park Swine Arena for two home games this year.

The new season brings fresh faces, more volunteers and officials, and a dozen returning skaters, all ready to give the people of the Tri Cities a taste of the exciting world of roller derby.

In addition to preparing new new skaters, volunteers and officials for the upcoming season, PVRV will be developing marketing plans and looking for tri-city businesses interested in sponsoring the league. Scheduled dates include:

Feb. 7 — vs. Omaha Rollergirls AAA @ Omaha, NE
Feb. 28 — vs. Heartland Hellcats (home)
Mar. 28 — vs. Heartland Hellcats @ North Platte NE
Apr. 11 vs. Salina Sirens @ Salina, KS
May 2 — vs. Veteran City Rollers @ Emporia, KS
Jun. 13 — vs. Central Kansas Roller Girls (home)

PVRV, a 501c(3) nonprofit, will also be partnering with The Crisis Center for the second year in a row, and will host fundraisers to benefit the organization at each home bout. Supporting the Crisis Center and its missing to empower victims of domestic violence is a cause close to the many of the Vixens.

“As a female driven sport, roller derby naturally fosters a culture of empowerment, support, and encourages strength in women, so we cannot think of a more empowering goal than putting a stop to domestic violence and sexual assault which predominantly affects women and children,” said Florence Welts, PVRV team captain.

The Crisis Center is a non-profit agency providing 24-hour emergency and supportive services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Grand Island and surrounding communities. In 2011, the Crisis Center sheltered 98 adults and 105 kids; assisted with 142 protection orders; provided advocacy to 522 kids; provided face-to-face advocacy to 1,495 people.
