The 2014 Nebraska State Fair will highlight three Draft Horse Hitch Shows the first weekend of the Fair and the Draft Horse Pull on the second Friday. In the Five Points Bank Arena on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon you will hear the sound of thundering hooves and see the beautiful wagons as these powerful animals perform against other teams for big trophies and premium monies.
According to State Fair livestock superintendent, Bill Angell “Some of the very best draft horse teams from across the U.S. will be on hand. It is a spectacle to watch the precision of the teams as they move around the Arena and to see how man and beast work together. Throughout the three performances you will see everything from single horses hitched to a cart to the 6 Horse Hitch in which a team of 6 horses is hitched to a large wagon and a driver maneuvers them around the Arena to be judged. The Draft Horse Pull features teams of horses trying to pull a sled with weights on it. They have to pull each weight a certain distance in order to continue on. These are all paid performances.” Tickets may be purchased at Etix.com or by contacting the Heartland Events Center ticket office.
“Monday and Tuesday of the Fair will feature some of the very best working dogs in the country. These dogs are trained to work cattle, ”Angell said, “They have a set course in which they will drive the cattle around the Arena, through different obstacles and then into a trailer. This is a timed event. There will be over 70 dogs perform the first day and the top 20 will work in the Midwest Regional Semi-Finals Monday evening. On Tuesday the dogs will perform again with the top 10 dogs going to the State Fair & Midwest Regional Finals Tuesday evening. It is amazing to watch how man/woman and dog work together.”
