GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSEUM — Stuhr Museum is proud to announce the opening of Railroad Town for the 2014 Summer Season!
During the season, visitors are invited to visit Railroad Town, Stuhr’s Living History Community, where the year is 1894. Visit the historic homes, travel down Front Street and see work being done in the blacksmith, tinsmith and millinery shops, stop by the mercantile where there’s always something new or by the Platte Valley Independent office to catch up on the latest town news. Very few interpretive sites like Railroad Town exist across the United States, making a visit to Railroad Town a memorable and unique experience, no matter what sites you visit.
Stuhr’s impressive collection of antique farm machinery is also available for viewing from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and Noon – 4 p.m. on Sundays. Located on the east grounds, the 200-piece Antique Auto and Farm Machinery building includes an 1880 threshing machine, early steam engines, tractors, and numerous examples of horse-drawn and tractor-drawn farm implements, hay rakes, cultivators, plows, potato planters, and much more.
This summer, Stuhr Museum is celebrating agriculture and the role it played in pioneer life. Many of our special events are planned along that theme this year, including the “Farm Machinery Extravaganza” on May 17 and the “Harvest Festival” in September. Our summer exhibit, “Gears of the Land,” opens on Saturday, May 10th. In between are dozens of special events, including our Memorial Day and Independence Day celebrations, two “Family Night” and “Hall County Appreciation Day” on May 10th, where everyone is invited to enjoy the museum free of charge.
Stuhr Museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Summer admission rates are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for children. Stuhr Museum and Hastings Museum members are admitted free.
