Hastings College in Hastings will host a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) volleyball tournament. High school matches will be Nebraska High School Hall of Fame Jamboree Games, and will features teams from each class of school from across Nebraska. Proceeds will go to the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame.
“The impetus for this came from Bill Marshall, a former state fair board member who passed away in January,” Joseph McDermott, executive director for the fair said, “We always looked to Bill to provide a steady hand, particularly when it came to our finances. We will miss his leadership, but he will always be remembered with the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic.”
Even though the Classic will be a feature of the Nebraska State Fair, many partners have worked to bring it to fruition. The Grand Island/Hall County CVB, Fonner Park, the Grand Island Sports Council, Hastings College and the Nebraska School Activities Association. Schools involved include Grand Island Senior High, Grand Island Northwest, Grand Island Central Catholic, Heartland Lutheran, their coaches and athletic directors.
“We expect the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic to grow exponentially each year, Jungck said, adding “we expect it to be as great as the man we’re honoring.”
